ASO SENTIR OVERVIEW

August 26 2024 | Blog Post, Venus Automation

In industry, safety of workers takes precedence as a cornerstone in the means of production. Hazardous zones around machinery remain constant in the workplace, so it is of utmost importance that human and machine alike are kept safe through standardised automated safety. ASO’s SENTIR safety mats and edges are no different, acting as pressure-sensitive sensors applied to ensure that crushing and shearing points are safeguarded from accidents.

Products such as SENTIR safety sensors are vital in automated machinery operation. In areas such as automatic gates/doors, and boundaries around industrial machinery, input provided by SENTIR mats and edges can be used as logical conditions that can in turn permit or inhibit the functionality of machinery. When conditions gathered and monitored by a Safety Edge are deemed to be unsafe, operation of automated machinery can then be halted; stopping instantly to prevent damage to workers and machines alike.

With various mounting solutions and sizes available, hazard boundaries of many shapes – for both industrial and home automation applications – can be reimagined with the SENTIR Safety Sensors.

WHAT are SENTIR SAFETY SENSORS?

SENTIR safety sensors refer to touch-sensitive sensors that can detect contact with a person or body part; effectively detecting anything that should not be present in that boundary. When the rubber of the safety mat/edge contacts an obstacle, a contact can be instantly switched; safely halting machinery before a crush or shear event can occur. These systems prove their usefulness in applications surrounding dangerous machinery, and frequently opening or closing automated entry/exit point.

Key overview of the ASO Sentir Safety MAT/Edge

Purpose and Function
SENTIR products have been designed to improve industrial safety settings, particularly for machine guarding operations. Safety Edges can be used to create safe, bordered areas surrounding lines that should not be crossed while operating. Using electrical contacts embedded within the safety edge, logic operators/relays can trigger the immediate shutdown of a machine – such as a roller door stopping when the edge detects something that will impede safe, normal operation. SENTIR Safety Edges are UL 325 certified, and are rated with varying Ingress Protection values to ensure that they withstand rigourous industrial environments that demand performance in harsh conditions.

The SENTIR Safety Edge enhances safety by creating a detection boundaries between human and machine, instantly stopping the machine’s dangerous movements if interrupted, thereby protecting operators. The resistor output from a safety edge can be monitored by mechanical or electronic logic operators (safety PLCs and relays), which can then detect changes (i.e. when obstacle contacts the safety edge), and then prevent a machine from continuing to be powered. ASO offers safety edges suited for a variety of applications, with heights as small as 8mm and as large as 85mm. Furthermore, SENTIR Safety Mats can be used as a large-scale safety boundary, and can cover larger areas with safety contacts to halt machinery.

SENTIR products feature ASO’s Plug’N’Sense System, which include a multiple chamber profile with an integrated protected switching chamber. Powered by 24 Volts 100m Amps, the Safety Edge can either be formatted in a 2-wire or 4-wire configurations. SENTIR products are constructed fully from EPDM or TPE, both durable but flexible rubbers. The 2 wire configurations include plastic end caps with onboard 8.2kΩ resistors. The end caps include retaining clips, and the edges are layed upon aluminium rails. The 2 and 4 cable configurations can then be wired into relays and/or safety PLCs to be monitored. SENTIR Safety Edges are rated for overtravel speeds and actuation forces dependent on the size/application of the chosen product.

SENTIR Safety Sensors integrate perfectly with ASO’s ELMON Safety Relays, and can also be incorporated into Wieland SAMOS PLCs. SENTIR Safety Edges thus facilitate their own integration with automated safety systems, advancing control and safety in industrial settings.

ASO Sentir Safety Edge Sizing and applications

Description

The SENTIR Safety Mat is a laminar section of safety contact. Stepping on the mat triggers an immediate stop signal to prevent endangering movements. They feature an integrated non-slip surface, and the mats can be connected in series to virtually any size requirement. Safety mats require ramp rails and corner connectors for the borders of the mats.

The SENTIR Safety Mat provides a large-scale protective boundary in an industrial environment. Supporing sizes from 1000mm x 750mm to 1350mm x 2350mm, the mats span large areas and provide a large buffer between hazardous machines and their operators.

The SENTIR mat can be configured into any custom rectangular dimension, using ramp rails and corner connectors to join each section. SENTIR Safety mats are offered in rectangular sheets of:

1000mm x 750mm

Description

The 25-40CN comes in two configurations, the CN2 and the CN3. The CN2 – the serial edge, allows for other lengths of safety edge to connect to it with up to 6 edges wired in series. The CN3 – the end edge, is the final edge in the series change which includes an end-cap resistor. The 25-40 CN is constructed from NBR (nitrile butadiene rubber), and thus includes a higher resistance to oil and grease.

This safety contact edge is constructed from a more oil resistant material, and is thus well suited to industrial applications that involve oil spills, or where mechanical grease is prevalent. The NBR construction material means that this safety edge is resistant to chemical degradation from oil. The 25-40 and 25-25 alike are both well suited to being fitted to doors.

key benefits of SENTiR DEVICES

SENTIR Devices are offered in varying levels of durability depending on application. With IP65 and IP68 protection values and oil resistant construction materials on offer, these safety sensors will withstand the test of time and the harsh demands of industrial workplaces. The ramp rails and mounting profiles for safety mats and edges alike are screwed directly into the ground, allowing for enhanced stability and durability of the products.

SENTIR products offer varying degrees of overtravel, actuation forces, and voltage/current demands to suit varying scales of industrial environments. Furthermore, their varying sizes and ability to be connected in series enables for versatility in the shapes/lengths the safety boundaries can assume. Finally, safety edges and mats can be configured in 2-wire and 4-wire cable configurations dependent on what available inputs/outputs are available onboard the relay of choice.

SENTIR Safety Mats and Edges can be powered by ASO’s ELMON Safety Relays, and thus allow for easy integration into larger scale automation applications. ASO’s Plug’N’Sense technology offers a further level of integration.
