Absolute Encoders

Absolute encoders are sensors that provide precise position feedback by measuring the absolute angular position of a rotating shaft, even after a power loss or system reset. Unlike incremental encoders, which only track relative movement, absolute encoders maintain their position data at all times, making them essential in applications where accuracy and continuity are critical.

The Opkon ERC10 series are optical absolute encoders, available in sine/cosine and BISS/SSI versions. Both versions operate using a rotating disk with alternating transparent and opaque sections. As the disk rotates, light passes through these sections and is detected by a sensor, which generates signals based on the disk’s position. The sine/cosine model produces analog signals that provide continuous position feedback, ideal for applications requiring high-resolution tracking. Meanwhile, the BISS/SSI version converts the light modulation into digital signals, supporting the BISS and SSI communication protocols for precise and reliable data transmission. Both models ensure accurate position tracking with fine resolution, making them suitable for tasks requiring consistent performance, even after power cycles or system interruptions.
